About the Shipibo Tribe
Peruvian Shipibo-Conibo Etnia
OME Retreats is partnered with the Peruvian Shipibo masters, known in their etnia as Maestros Ayahahuasqueros.
The Shipibo Tribe kindly shares with us their knowledge and healing abilities gained from their deep and respectful understanding of mother nature (pacha mama) as well as their community sense of coexistence.
Our compromise with them is to preserve this ancestral wisdom as well as preserve the plant medicine itself.
Being able to share and learn from this pre -Hispanic community’s culture that preserves and maintains their ancestral traditions is one of the great wonders of this beautiful country. The Shipibo ethnic group is people that live in the Peruvian Amazon and are famous for their colorful and original works of art. Much of their knowledge and worldview wisdom comes from a deeply rooted relationship to plants, animals, and the natural world. This is evidenced in their pottery, textiles, baskets, art, and beadwork, which display patterns representative of the harmonious energy field that pervades all things. This concept of an all-encompassing reality of oneness can challenge the typical Western mind, but it is what informs and influences the efficacy of their shamanic practices. These patterns represent not only the oneness of creation, the non-dualistic nature of all things, the union or fusion of perceived opposites – they are also an ongoing dialogue or communion with the spiritual world and powers of Nature.
People of The Shipibo Tribe
The Shipibo are people that arose from the fusion of three others: the Shipibo, the Konibo, and the Shetebos. Although it is not known exactly when this union of cultures occurred, the peoples that preceded the Shipibo-Konibo arrived on the banks of the Ucayali River in the Peruvian Amazon coming from the north, between 810 and 650 BC. In other words, these cultures have been in the Peruvian jungle for almost 3,000 years!
The origin of the name of this culture: according to their own words, comes from when their ancestors painted their forehead, chin and mouth with a black dye, which made them look like a species of monkey called shipi and that lives in the area. Although some people believe that this can be denigrating, the Shipibo defend and accept their name to this day.
The Shipibo people are a culture closely related to the spiritual and nature. Living in the middle of the Amazon, they are completely surrounded by rivers, plants, trees and animals, which are the axis on which their customs and way of life revolve.
The Shipibos use ayahuasca as a means of inspiration to make their works of art, but this plant is also part of other moments of their day to day.
Thus, this culture is known as the guardians of ayahuasca and among them there are a large number of shamans who maintain this tradition from generation to generation.
